If you are a diabetic, there are some foods you should simply not consume. Unfortunately, certain foods can cause additional health problems, including higher cholesterol and heart disease. The best way to avoid any complications and medical conditions is to avoid those unhealthy options and follow a specific diet consisting of many healthy ingredients.
Many people assume that all foods for diabetics are too plain and bland. While that may have been the case a long time ago, there are now a lot of diabetic-friendly recipes available in cookbooks, many of which are flavorful. In fact, you may be surprised to learn that you can still enjoy treats and snacks, but you simply need to modify the recipes with better ingredients that will not cause any harm to your health.
What You Should Not Put on Your Plate
There are quite a few things you should not eat as a diabetic. Some of those foods include candied fruit, fatty meat and traditional cake or brownies. Candied fruit and other types of traditional sweet treats often contain way too much sugar. Along with avoiding too much sugar, you do not want to consume meat that contains too much fat and sodium.
Some of the other items you need to avoid include bacon, French fries and donuts. You may not like the idea of giving up some of these different items, but there are much healthier alternatives to consider. You can replace your traditional bacon with turkey bacon and your regular French fries with baked sweet potato fries. There are healthier ways to make donuts by using low-fat yogurt and a sugar substitute instead of traditional sugar.
What You Should Start Eating
Not all foods are created equally. In fact, some are a lot better for you than others. If you would like to improve your health and keep your diabetes under control, the best thing to do is to start eating some of these different foods:
- Brown rice
- Turkey Breast
- Cottage Cheese
These are not the only foods you can consume, but they are some of the greatest options. You can do a lot with these items, including making some baked salmon with a side of brown rice and broccoli or a slice of baked turkey breast with a side of carrots and quinoa. You can even bake the broccoli in the oven to create your own crispy broccoli chips as a snack instead of eating those unhealthy and excessively salty potato chips.
Even if you are a diabetic, you can still enjoy flavorful food. It is most important to choose the right ingredients. For example, you do not have to stop eating pasta dishes. Instead, make sure to select whole wheat pasta instead of the traditional kind. You can even use whole wheat flour in recipes that call for flour.
Keep yourself healthy by eating the right things. As long as you use the right ingredients and choose your food wisely, you can avoid some serious health problems.
